This
trip was on-off-on-off-on, due
to the late "wet" & the
cyclones.
Three Toyotas (Hoppy, Scissors &
Lockie)
wended their way from the banks of
the Daintree River to Cooktown,
travelling along the just opened
Bloomfield track. After a short
stay taking in the history of
Captain Cook, they hit the Cape
'proper' by taking the Battlecamp Road crossing the
Normanby River.
Before long, they were weaving
their
way up to Weipa. After spending
several days, they took the short cut to Moreton
Station, only to find the
track was "closed".
Their journey changed direction to Vrilya Point, This stretch
included an 8km beach drive to
see the wreck of an old
lightship, washed ashore many
years ago.
Nearing the Tip, they made a base
camp at Punsand Bay and then set
off for a day trip to the
'historic' Thursday Island
(40kms NW of Cape York).
The
next day was the highlight of
their trip. They finally made it to
the Tip - the most northerly
point of the Australian
mainland!
Their
return journey from the Tip took
them via Ussher Point, Captain
Billy's Landing, Chilli Beach
where the mud was 200mm deep!!
After a night at Coen,
they
descended on Maytown. A
delightful spot, steeped in
history.
The Cape is truly a great
experience!
