Crossing the Simpson Desert is a
great feat in itself. But this
trip decided to add in the great
excitement of the Birdsville
Races.
In
Aug/Sep last year, Eric Bishop
took on the challenge of taking
a convoy of six vehicles via
Woomera & Coober Pedy before
heading offroad to Oodnadatta.
After topping up with last
minute items from the famour
Oodnadatta Pink Roadhouse, they
headed north for the warm waters
at Dalhousie Springs.
The convoy turned east and
headed for the Simpson Desert,
crossing main sand dunes along
the French Line, WAA Line &
Knolls Track.
One of the trip's many
highlights was to visit Poeppels
Corner (where SA, Qld & NT
borders meet). Before arriving
in Birdsville, the convoy had
some fun driving up the biggest
Simpson Desert sand dune 'Big
Red'.
After settling down in
Birdsville & checking out the
famous pub, it was off to the
Birdsville Races. It is rumoured
that many bets were seen & lost
in the red dirt as the horses
thundered past the winning post!
On the return leg via Innaminka,
the convoy checked out
Cordillo Downs before heading
out to Burke's (of Burke &
Wills) Dig Tree site.
