Back in September 1862, a route was discovered to the Woods Point - Jordan Goldfields, which was almost direct from Melbourne, via the Yarra and the Great Divide. This became known as the `Yarra Track`. This route travelled from Melbourne, through Eltham, along the north side of the Yarra to the Watts River at Fernshaw, then continued up to Mount Dom Dom Saddle & then across the range into the Acheron River Valley & up Mount Strickland. From here it continued across the Paradise Plains to the Cumberland River. |
From there it continued to Mt. Arnold and then along the crest of the dividing range to the goldfields. The arduous route from Mt.Dom Dom Saddle via Mt. Strickland to Mount Arnold was later by-passed when an easier route through Marysville and the Cumberland valley was found. Nearly 150 years later, 6 vehicles from the TLCV headed out on a day trip to 'Beeches' to explore the forgotten section of the ‘Yarra Track’ from Dom Dom to Beeches. |
